Summer tyres

At Däckgruppen we use the 7-7-7 rule of thumb.

That means it's time to fit summer tyres once it's warmer than:

• 7°C
• 7 days in a row

Summer tyres are defined by a specific rubber compound. The rubber used in summer tyres is made to keep its optimal softness and elasticity at temperatures above 7°C. When the temperature drops below 7°C the rubber hardens, which makes the tyre perform worse.

Time period

In Sweden, since 1999 you may not use summer tyres between 1 December and 31 March if winter road conditions apply. Winter road conditions means there is snow, ice, slush or frost on any part of the road.

Safety

Across Europe, the tread depth on summer tyres must be at least 1.6 mm.

The ability most affected as tyres wear down is their ability to disperse water, which reduces contact with the road surface and worsens the tyre's grip. It also increases the risk of aquaplaning.

At 3–4 mm tread depth it's recommended that you have your tyres checked.
